Christian Dior a/w

These are images from Christian Diors A/W 2009 runway collection. The collection was heavily inspired by 1920's flapper makeup. I feel that they have taken make-up inspiration from the 1920's but adapted it, for high fashion, to fit the catwalk.

The Great Gatsby Ballet

These are the images from The Great Gatsby Ballet. Directed by David Nixon, he said that he wanted to make the audience feel like they were from the twenties.  The outfits are beautiful, yet simple in colour, as all of the images above show cream coloured clothing. Daisys make-up in these images is clean complexion, with a striking red lip, perhaps to symbolise her sexuality.

1920'S HAIR STYLES

The Marcel wave is the iconic 20's hairstyle. Here are some styles from the 20's.

I have found some more modern interpretations of the marcel wave or 'finger wave'.
This is a look from the SS 2011 PRADA collection.

Here is my first attempt at creating the marcel wave in our technical sessions.

This look was created by getting the front of the hair wet, and combing it back. Then, whilst pressing down hard on the damp hair, comb the hair the opposite way. A grip is then placed in the curve. This continues for the rest of the hair. Once you have reached the end, pin curl the hair up.

Gatsby Glamour

From VOGUE.COM spring/summer 2012 collection inspired by The Great Gatsby. The look for 2012 was heavily beaded knee length dresses.
From Tory Burch 2012 collection

Marchesa

Ralph Lauren
Ralph Laurens beautiful collection was heavily inspired by the Great Gatsby

VOGUE

1920's flapper girls, with a twist. The wet look waves her created by hair stylist John frieda, metallic eyes by Lisa Eldridge using MAC.
This look next look is created by Guido Palau, in september 2010 for Milan fashion week. even though it is based on the thirty jazz era, i feel that the marcel waves still represent 1920's fashion.

In vogue 2011, because of the filming of the most recent Great Gatsby interpretation, they used the 1920's for inspiration. The spring/summer collection where filled with black and gold flapper style dresses at Gucci. And sports wear at Ralph Lauren.

They put together a selection of must have's that any flapper girl would be wearing. The first product they selected was a bright red lipstick, by one of the major brands from the 1920's with was Elizabeth Arden. The next product listed on VOGUE was a cheek stain, to represent their heavily rouged cheeks.
Finally another pro ducted suggested was a red nail polish. In the 20's red was the desired shade for all women, with a crescent shape left unpainted at the bottom.

STYLE.COM 1920's

Using STYLE.COM i have researched modern interpretation of the 1920's flapper girl look.

This look is from Spring 2007, Sonia Rykiel's runway show. I think this look is very much a flapper girl look. Her floaty purple dress shows of the freedom that flapper girls needed when they were dancing to Jazz music, all topped off with the chunky silver and flowered hairband.
