Before world war one young women lived a life in which they did not date, had long hair, were feminine but broke some gender boundaries as they enjoyed sport such as golf. 

After the war this changed, young women wanted to start enjoying life. They began the phase of the ‘flapper girls’.

Flapper girls wore less clothing to make movement easier, they could dance more to jazz music. The hem of women’s skirts started to rise, and women began to cut their hair into a ‘bob’. A popular haircut of the time has the ‘shingle’ this was a short cut with a curl on each side of the face that covered their ears. Women also started wearing makeup, such as rouge, powder, eyeliner and lipstick.

Along with their appearance, their attitude also started to change, they started enjoying sex, flaunting their sexuality and drinking. They generally started becoming more wreck less and started smoking. Smoking was only ever previously done by men, this shocked their parents.

The 1920’s also welcomed the jazz age. Flapper women loved going out dancing to jazz. Daisy is the perfect example of a 1920’s Flapper girl.

 

What was life like in the 1920's?

The war had just ended, people wanted to celebrate. The decade of the 20's was one that welcomed illegal booze and gangs. It saw the rise of Jazz and radio and crime. Crime unfortunately became common all over New York, this was due to the prohibition of alcohol and the number of limited jobs. Bootleggers was the term used to describe people who would smuggle liquor into the city.
However some jobs were made by the beginning of mass production. This was popularised by Ford, the motor company. This also led to the mass production of automobiles.

Character analysis - Daisy Buchanan

For my character analysis i am going to analyse the character of Daisy, this is is because i am going to base my interpreting narrative project around her. 

When does my character live? What does the environment look like?

1922, this was post ww1 times, and the era welcomes booze, jazz and gangs

Does my character work? if so, what?

Who does my character live with, and what is their relationship?

She lives with her husband Tom, and their daughter. 

What props does my character relate to within the play?

Flowers, Clothing- She wears a lot of white - representation of an angel?

How do them props develop my character?

I think that the use of the props make her more glamourous

What emotion should the audience feel toward my character?

I think that at the start of the novel you get the feel that she is a friendly character, with whom you sympathise as shortly into the book you discover her husband is having an affair.

In the beginning of the book what do you discover about the character?

She is adored, she is married, her husband is cheating on her, people find her attractive

In the middle of the book, how does my character grow and change?

I think that you see her character develop, you see that she isn't as innocent as first perceived. She also meets Gatsby and tell him that she still loves him

In the end of my book now has my chacreter developed?

In the end of the book she hit her husbands lover over with a car, leaving Gatsby to take the blame, this is her showing her true colours, she shows that she is selfish and hurtful, she becomes less ideal.

Does my character have children? 

Yes she does, however she is hardly shown/spoken about. However there is one part where she says that she hopes her daughter 'is a fool, and relies on her beauty' as she does. She treats the child like an object.

The 1920's in New York has often been referred to as 'the jazz age'.This was because it was celebratiing the end of the war and the beginging of Jazz and dance music. The introduction of large broadcastng via the radio also made Jazz music extremely popular, as it meant people could listen to it without having to be in a club.

As the story is set in Long Island i am going to look at some images from there at the time.

This blog is all about my project, interpreting narrative, for this project i have chosen to study F.Scott Fitzgeralds novel The great Gatsby. I have chosen to study this book as i feel that there were a number of interesting characters to study and i have previously read the book, which i really enjoyed.

The great gatsby takes place in 1922, the jazz age, and is set in the United States just after World War 1. The story is about a man named Nick who moves to Long Island, and unwillingly moves next door to a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby. Jay Gatsby is a well known man who always throws wonderful partys in which many people are invited to. He is in love with nicks cousin Daisy and they begin an affair which ends up in disaster.

The Great Gatsby is set in Long Island, New York. The story shows the wealthy lifestyle of Americans in the 1920's, who were not affected by the poverty. The story displays parties, with large amounts of alcohol, which was at the time very much illegal. However this is important to the story as this is how Jay Gatsby got his wealth, from 'bootlegging'.
